Global Fallout: Japan and Spain Sever Military Ties with Israel Post-ICJ Ruling

Under fire Israel, now faces wrath of major arms companies after ICJ ruling. Several arms makers worldwide have announced the end of military ties with Israel. Japan’s Itochu, announced its aviation arm is ending its MOU with Israel’s Elbit.

Japanese Company cuts military ties with Israel

Taking into consideration the international court of Justice’s order on January 26, and that the Japanese government supports the role of the court. They have already suspended new activities related to the MOU, and plan to end the MOU by the end of February.

In a similar move, Spain also decided to suspend all arms exports to Israel. Declaration to halt arms exports to Israel was made by the Spanish foreign minister. Jose Manuel Albares cited “Israel bombing of UN Facilities, Schools and hospitals” in Gaza. Spain also called on Israel to comply with the ICJ’s Gaza case ruling.

South Belgium’s Wallonia region also temporarily suspended arms licenses to Israel. The regional government of Wallonia halted two ammunition export licenses to Israel. Region’s president, Elio Di Rupo, cited the recent ICJ order on Gaza Crises for decision.

“The January 26 order of the International Court of Justice, the main judicial organ of the United Nations, as well as the unacceptable deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip led the Minister-President to temporarily suspended the valid licenses.”
